The Health Benefits of Conjugated Linoleic Acid

Conjugated Linoleic acid or CLA is a recent discovery in the world of modern science. Although the substance itself has existed for quite some time now information about its health benefits has just been discovered. CLA is derived from Trans fatty acid from ruminants or mammals that feed on plants. Studies show that the animal with the highest CLA content is the Kangaroo, although beef and mutton are also considered rich in the acid. CLA is gaining popularity in the diet and health industry because of recently discovered health benefits.

What is the health benefits attributed to CLA? According to studies CLA rich food have high antioxidant or nutrition like Hoodia Gordonii content which are popular for cancer prevention also for weight loss. Studies on lesser animals like rats show a significant hindrance to tumor growth in the mammary glands, skin, and colon tissue. Swiss studies have also shown that women who drink organic milk from ruminants have a half the chance of developing breast cancer.

There have been studies that show CLA having body fat loss effects especially in the abdominal area. Although scientists are still trying to isolate the mechanisms involved in generating these effects the results have been apparent enough to go beyond assumption. It has been discovered that CLA can decrease glucose uptake which reduces the release of insulin in the body consequently reducing the possibility of hunger pangs. There are other benefits that are attributed to CLA but most of which are still in need of further clinical study for suitable confirmation.

CLA is a new discovery and should be treated as such. There is no reason to go looking for kangaroo meat just yet, at least until all possible advantages and disadvantages are discovered. There have been theories that increasing CLA in the body could lead to an aggravated insulin resistance that may lead to diabetes. It is important to keep a vigilant tab on CLA first before trying it. Perhaps the discovery of its effects only emphasizes the importance of having a balanced diet and including non processed or organic food in the diet. As long as a person includes food derived from ruminants in his or her diet then a significant amount of CLA will be absorbed and the benefits that come with it will be pretty much insured. As with any other discovery in health and nutrition one must always observe all facts and not jump the gun especially because it involves the well being of the body or lack thereof.
