Building A Business That Works For You
Before you want to build your business, you need to know why you are in this business.
Many of us entered business as a technician. You know the technical nature of this business; you do it everyday; over and over again. The question is: How can you do this technical work with the highest level of efficiency and effectiveness so that you'll have a great business?
Some of you entered the business as the manager. You plan, you quantify, and you implement it with and through others. The question is: How can you do management work that will get your team to work for as though they're running their own business?
Some of you entered the business as an entrepreneur. You have this wonderful idea. You're an innovator. How do I get others to see it, to feel it, to breathe it?
Is this familiar to you? It should be, there is an entrepreneur, manager and technician in all of us. We need all three to have a successful business.
Building a Business FOR YOU is just about 3 steps:
Step 1: Why You Do What You Do
The starting point for building a business that works begins with why you do what you do. The challenge facing most business owners is the understanding of what they want for their life. It's not the cars, the money, or the house. It is the essence, the purpose of their life. It's the source of their passion and their vitality. It gives them clarity and purpose. It is their guiding light. It is what we call their Ultimate Objective.
Do you know your Ultimate Objective? The business is designed and built to give you what you want, because it's your life we're talking about.
Step 2: Your Strategic Vision
A Strategic Vision describes what your business will look like when it is complete. It will define your products and services and how those products and services will be delivered.
It will identify your customers and how those customers will be located, cared for and served. It will quantify your sales and profit goals. It will describe your culture; employee behavior, operational philosophy and the unique characteristics that will allow your company to fulfill your entrepreneurial vision.
It is your vision for the future. Your Strategic Vision should be so clear and precise that any question you have about the business can be answered by reading it. The Strategic Vision is the source of bringing balance to the entrepreneur, the manager and the technician. The entrepreneur creates the vision in the Strategic Vision, the manager plans, quantifies and implements the vision, and the technician does the work of the work.
Understand that your Strategic Vision is one of the most effective ways to share your dream with employees and identify how employees will participate in realizing your dream. It is their guide of how they do it and why they do it. Do your strategic vision now!
Step 3: Your Business Plan
Now is the time to write your business plan. Your business plan is a detailed roadmap of how you are going to build your business that will achieve your Ultimate Objective and your Strategic Vision.
Your business plan must cover 7 essential things: Executive Summary, Business Mission and Vision, Business Strategy, Marketing Plan, Operational Plan, Human Resource Plan and Financial Projections.

We very much like what we see in Lubbock, TX as a good place for a service business. We are bullish on Lubbock and see how a service company could advance forces into the area to seize market share. There is excellent labor there due to the colleges and a strong growing middle class with younger families. Retail sector is good as well along the Northwest outer ring.

If you're organized, smart, capable and willing to work with deadlines, you could start a virtual assistance business and cash in on your skills without having to commit to an employer (you'd be your own boss instead) or the "cube life". Truck Wash Business Case Study
Often smart entrepreneurs look for out of the way businesses, things out of the mainstream but businesses, which have a good customer base and steady incomes. This is an extremely interesting story. I had always considered the mobile truck washing efforts to be very profitable and believed that fixed truck washes were a big waste of money. That was until one year when a new franchisee joined our team from Oklahoma City. I run a franchise company called the Car Wash Guys; www.carwashguys.com. Turns out the franchisee was formerly employed by Blue Beacon Truck Washes the largest chain of truck washes in the US. They do about $138,000,000 per year with 80 truck washes and the company is very closely held. Tim our franchisee was a truck manager for them and before buying into our franchise and started washing cars in OKC even though he knows truck washing best. He had a two-year non-compete with his old company, which we have honored in OKC. He has tons of experience and had indicated to me that the business is sound and we should really get into it. Later that year I sold a franchise to a person in WA State who owned car washes (5) and he made a deal with a truck stop on an Indian Reservation, he never started the plan, but the numbers we ran on the spreadsheet looked great and very profitable.
Franchise Territories are Generally Delineated On a Map; Why?
If you own a mobile service or home based franchise your exclusive territory will be delineated on a map in the attachment of your franchise agreement. You will be assigned generally a single city, county or region and another franchisee or team member of the same system will not compete with your although may be right around the corner. You will only drive or be required to service clients as far as your exclusive territory boundaries. Unless of course there is no franchisee in the next city over, then might be willing to temporarily expand your market region if it is okay with the franchisor. You may go to that city periodically for special people or special clients that have needs of services. This is why we have exclusive territories in the franchising industry.
Image of Your Franchise Automotive Outlet is So Important
Image of your franchise automotive outlet is so important. Some say image is everything, well then if you buy a franchise you should be constantly thinking of image and cleanliness. If you read Ray Kroc's book "Grinding it Out" (McDonalds Visionary) or Tom Monahan's (Founder of Dominos Pizza) book "Franchising for Dummies" or Howard Shultz's book; "Pour Your Heart Into it" (Story of Starbucks) you will see they all built brand on image. Even for those of you who are the extroverted sales type, plenty of examples such as "Customer's For Life" by Carl Sewel and "Exceeding Customer Expectations" by Jack Taylor (founder of Enterprise Rent-A-Car). But as I travel the country and have literally been to every city in the country over 10,000 population in the US;
Financial Fundamentals - What Every Small Business Owner Should Know!
Business owners rarely go into business to deal with the financial aspects of running a business. It's easy to understand why! You are passionate about the products or services you provide and want to focus your time there. The financial aspect usually falls to the bottom of the "desired responsibilities" list. It is critical to the long-term success of your business that you understand some of the Financial Fundamentals of being a business owner though. You don't have to be an accountant or financial analyst, but it is important that you have some key skills in your business toolkit to measure the financial aspects of your business. It's okay to outsource this activity so that someone else can do the work you don't like to do, but make sure you understand the output of the financial information. You'll need it to help you make informed decisions about your business. Remember! Accounting is not just about taxes. There's so much more to know about the numbers, so you'll know how your business is doing from the management perspective.
Why Internet Shopping is the New Mall of the Future
Last year, trillions of dollars transferred hands on the internet with regard to sales, or as the internet wishes to call it, eCommerce. The internet is becoming an increasingly complex manipulation of do's and don'ts. However, one thing I am sure of is, what are you doing? The cliche says, "Either get in the game, or sit and watch from the sidelines." I've been sitting around long enough and recently took bold steps to leap into eCommerce.
